  • What sort of problem can a Pet Consultant help with?

I can help with a wide variety of behavioural problems with domestic pets. Like aggression, destructiveness, toileting problems, marking, spraying, self-mutilation, vocal behaviour, nervousness, phobias, car travel, livestock chasing and general training.

  • What happens during a consultation?

Consultations are held at the client's home so I can get a better understanding of the pet's environment. They normally last between 1 ½ - 2 hours depending on the behavioural problem. A history of the problem is taken to help me work out what is causing the behavioural problem. I can then assess your pet and prepare a suitable modification programme for you and your pet to follow.

  • What happens after the consultation?

Often only one consultation is required, depending on the behaviour of your pet. If further treatment is required, this can be done either over the telephone or for more complex cases, subsequent consultations may be arranged.

After this, a report is sent to you and your referring veterinarian so that they can also follow your pets progress and give any medication, which may be necessary with some cases, in conjunction with the behavioural modification programme.

  • How quickly will I see results, and can I be guaranteed a result?

The behavioural modification programme will be set up so that you, your family and your pet will be able to work through it together. There are NO ‘quick fix’ solutions to behaviour problems, although some problems can be easily solved. It takes a lot of hard work and commitment from you and your family (even your friends), but by contacting a pet counsellor in the first place, it shows you are taking a step in the right direction.

  • How do I get an appointment to see you?

Not every pet will need to be seen by a veterinarian before a consultation, but some pets may need medical care, so it is advised to get your pet checked by a veterinarian first to rule out any medical issues.

If your pet is medically alright, then you can contact me to arrange a consultation.

Initial Consultation (home visit – approx. 1 ½ hour) with a written behaviour modification programme/training £150.

Follow up sessions - £60/hour.

For complex behavioural issues/pets with known or potential medical/physical issues and you want to claim against your pet insurance, then I would recommend seeing your vet first and then book an appointment with me.
